Putting Down the Mallett in New England

By: Shohei Takano

In a bit of unsurprising Patriots news, Ryan Mallett was traded to the Houston Texans. Rumors had been swirling around Mallett’s future with the Patriots since the NFL Draft in May that it was only a matter of time before the Pats worked their front office magic. With Jimmy Garoppolo in the fold, and having overtaken Mallett on the depth chart, Mallett now goes to a Texans team as their backup quarterback, ahead of rookie Tom Savage, and behind an aging Ryan Fitzpatrick.

It seems that Mallett will have a chance to compete for the starting spot over the course of the season in the event that Fitzpatrick’s performance does not come to par. I had Fitzpatrick as my 28th ranked quarterback and, while he’s impressed over the latter half of the preseason, I have Mallett, should he overtake the starting job in Houston, at best, ranked 26th with upside to move up.
